Home Chapter: Detroit

City/state of residence: St. Clair Shores, Michigan

University/degree: Michigan State University/B.A. in Communications

What year did you join PRSA (national)? 1995

What was your first job out of college? Public relations coordinator at Crittenton Hospital (now Henry Ford Health).

What was your biggest career lesson? I learned early on the importance of being a good writer. I once had to rewrite a media pitch six times because my initial pitch was too long. However, each time I refined it, the pitch was more succinct. The experience
was invaluable and helped me become a stronger writer!

What is the most memorable moment in your career?

  1. While at a PR firm, I was part of a team charged with securing broadcast coverage for a client visiting the West Coast to promote pizza kits. With the time difference, it was a challenge to connect with morning show producers and assignment editors. I set my alarm and called assignment desk producers at the start of their shifts. My strategy worked, and I secured TV opportunities for the client.
  2. I led an agency project with a pharmaceutical client where Detroit was one of nine cities involved in trials for an FDA-approved medication, with each city hiring its own PR firm. The firm that secured the most media results received a bonus – which I’m happy to say that my agency received! The client contacted my employer to express appreciation for my initiative and work ethic to secure key media results.

What is your lesson to graduates entering the workforce in PR?

  1. Take initiative and be proactive! I learned a lot by observing and interacting with PR leaders. Whether a person is a new or seasoned pro, we are always learning. I learn from my colleagues and clients every day.
  2. Join a professional organization such as PRSA and the local chapter. Become active
by joining a committee. It is an investment in yourself! You will be stronger for the
experience. Network with other PR pros by attending programs and pursuing
    professional development opportunities.

What is your favorite aspect of the PR profession? I enjoy storytelling and specialize in media relations. It is rewarding to pitch a story and position clients as go-to resources for journalists. The highest compliment is when a journalist contacts me to interview a
client that they have interviewed in the past.

What do you most value about PRSA? I value my network, PR friends and colleagues, and leadership opportunities as a member of PRSA Detroit, where I served as the 2023 president. The experience was invaluable and made me an even stronger communications professional.

What do you hope to accomplish in joining the ECD board? I can provide key insights and make a difference based on my experiences serving as a past president of PRSA Detroit.

When not working, where would we find you? I enjoy photography, travel, spending time with family and friends, and cheering for Detroit’s pro sports teams (Lions, Red Wings, Tigers) and Michigan State University Spartans.
