Program Spotlight: PRSA Detroit’s Immersive Internship Program

, , , ,

A unique and immersive opportunity to support the Chapter across all committees; network with industry professionals.

Internships are an essential part of an undergraduate student’s education journey. As a result, PRSA Detroit saw a need and decided to establish an internship program. The process began a year in advance with a written plan and the formation of an Internship Committee to oversee the program.

In 2022, the PRSA Detroit Chapter launched an internship program that runs 1 or 2 semesters each year. The goal is to provide real-world knowledge while supporting the day-to-day activities of the chapter. The Chapter’s first intern was Destiny Williams, an Oakland University alumna.

The internship is open and available to PR-related undergraduate students from all Michigan universities who support internship credit. An intern needs to complete 150 hours during the internship (10-12 hours per week for 14 weeks). The intern can identify dates and times to satisfy a 3-4 credit internship. The PRSA Detroit intern meets weekly (virtually) with Internship Committee co-supervisors (which includes a current Board member) who discuss assignments and answer questions. The PRSA Detroit intern tracks hours and tasks through time tracking software.

The paid internship includes a stipend at the end of the semester, which averages to $15 per hour (competitive with rates for agency internships in the metro Detroit market).

PRSA Detroit raises funds to offset the cost of the paid internship. Throughout the year, members can contribute to the Future Generations Fund.

The application process includes a brief questionnaire and submission of a student’s current resume. Applications are reviewed by members of the PRSA Detroit Internship Committee. Zoom interviews are conducted with the top 3-5 candidates. Importantly, internship candidates must complete a writing test.

A PRSA Detroit intern will interface with the Chapter through a minimum of five networking ‘coffee’ meetings and at least one Board meeting.

“My PRSA Detroit internship experience was a transformative journey that helped expand my professional network and PR skills,” said Cydney Foster, Associate, 98Forward, PRSA Detroit’s 2023 intern and a Central Michigan University alumna. “From mentorship and career resources to invaluable industry experience, the chapter played a pivotal role in helping me secure my first job outside of college. My internship paved the way and provided me with opportunities that I can confidently say helped shape my career.”

Notably, the internship program complements PRSA Detroit’s annual scholarship program, established more than 30 years ago with an education fund that has grown over the years. PRSA Detroit offers 1 or 2 scholarships a year to a local Michigan undergraduate student. PRSA Detroit hosts an annual Strikes for Scholarships event where members gather at a local bowling alley for camaraderie, fun and to help raise funds for the scholarship program.
