April 2024

Hello PRSA ECD Community:

As we welcome the vibrant blooms of spring this April, we also celebrate a significant milestone in the professional lives of many within our community – APR Month. The Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) marks not just a testament to a public relations professional’s knowledge, skills, and abilities, but it also symbolizes a commitment to our industry’s growth and ethical standards.

Reflecting on my own journey to earning the APR designation, I am reminded of the pivotal role mentorship and ambition played in my decision to pursue this path. Encouraged by a mentor and a supportive boss, I was inspired to join the distinguished professionals with the APR credential. To me, achieving this was more than an accolade; it was a step forward in my leadership journey, a commitment to upholding the highest standards in public relations.

The process of preparing for the APR was both rigorous and rewarding. It followed a structured model, beginning with the application submission, then by preparation for the review panel, studying for the Computer-Based Examination (CBE), and, finally, maintaining the accreditation. This preparation phase was crucial, demanding a disciplined approach to understanding and embodying the principles of public relations in all its facets – from ethical behavior and strategic thinking to research and evaluation.

The preparation phase was pivotal, requiring a strategic and thorough approach. My local PRSA chapter offered an APR Study Course, which met weekly in person for several weeks. This was an invaluable opportunity, providing me with a detailed overview of the accreditation process and reinforcing my determination to succeed. Developing a timeline was crucial, helping me navigate the preparation process with discipline and focus. Regular interactions with my Chapter’s APR Chair were also instrumental, offering me guidance and insight into the intricacies of the review panel and the preparation of the Panel Presentation Questionnaire.

Utilizing the resources available was imperative. From essential texts like Cutlip and Center’s “Effective Public Relations” to the APR Study Guide, each resource was crucial in deepening my understanding of the profession.

The journey to achieving my APR was more than a pursuit of professional accreditation; it was a learning experience that underscored the importance of continuous professional development. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of preparation, mentorship, and the pursuit of excellence. Now, I am part of others’ journeys as a mentor and frequent panelist for Panel Presentations.

As we celebrate APR Month, let’s recognize the hard work and dedication of those who have embarked on this journey and encourage others within our community to consider how APR can enrich their professional lives. Let this month be a time of reflection on our commitments to our profession, ethical practice, and lifelong learning.

To those contemplating the APR, remember this is a personal and professional growth journey. The path may be challenging, but it is gratifying, offering a unique opportunity to validate your dedication and expertise in public relations.

From one APR to another, and to all those considering this distinguished path, I extend my best wishes for your success and continued growth in our dynamic profession.

Warm regards,

Jennifer L. Kramer, APR
